The Greater Kaweah GSA (GKSGA) Initial Draft Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) and its other component documents underwent a public review period of 90-days beginning September 16, 2019. A public hearing was held on December 16, 2019 concluding the comment period. Several committee meetings and board meetings were held to publicly discuss and consider comments received. On January 22, 2020 the GKGSA Board of Directors took action to approve the Kaweah Subbasin Coordination Agreement and adopt the Greater Kaweah GSA GSP.

Revisions to GSP and Coordination Agreement Submitted by July 27, 2022

As the regulating and assisting agency under the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), the CA Department of Water Resources (DWR) had two years to evaluate the 2020 version of the Greater Kaweah GSP. DWR submitted its evaluation prior to the January 31, 2022 review deadline, determining the Kaweah Subbasin plans to be incomplete. This status was also given to all San Joaquin Valley GSPs. DWR’s full assessment of the Greater Kaweah GSA’s GSP can be accessed here. The Kaweah Subbasin GSAs coordinated on revisions based on DWR’s comments, and each GSA resubmitted their GSP within the mandated 180 days after receiving the comments.

Public Review on Revised GSPs

GKGSA noticed a 90-day comment period on the revised GSP and revised GSP process on February 7, 2022. Several Board and committee meetings have presented progress on the update (presentations available from the agendas page) and despite the official comment period, comments are still being accepted through mid-July 2022. Additionally, after the revised GSP was submitted in July 2022, an additional 60-day public comment opportunity was offered by DWR. Comments can be submitted through DWR’s SGMA portal HERE.

Groundwater is managed locally by the Greater Kaweah GSA through policies, programs and projects, but long-term sustainability requires the collaboration of the entire region.
