During Groundwater Awareness Week, we’re reminded of the importance of a resource that many in the Greater Kaweah Subbasin depend on every day but rarely see groundwater. Beneath our communities lies a vital water supply that supports our homes, farms, local economy, and environment.

The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) set California on a path toward protecting this resource for the long term. Through SGMA, local agencies like the Greater Kaweah Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) are working to better understand our basin and develop solutions that ensure groundwater remains reliable and sustainable for future generations.

At Greater Kaweah GSA, this work is made possible through collaboration with landowners, growers, residents, partner agencies, and our community. Managing groundwater sustainably requires thoughtful planning, good data, and sometimes difficult decisions but it also reflects our shared commitment to protecting the resources that sustain our region.

Our staff, board members, and partners work year-round to monitor groundwater conditions, implement management actions, develop projects, and engage with stakeholders to meet SGMA’s goals while supporting the communities that rely on this basin.

Groundwater may be out of sight, but it plays a critical role in our everyday lives. During Groundwater Awareness Week, we recognize the importance of this hidden resource and reaffirm our commitment to responsible groundwater management in the Greater Kaweah Subbasin.
